International Men's Day
International Men's Day is an opportunity for us to raise awareness about men's wellbeing and to encourage and support conversations that support the wellbeing of men.
The theme for this year’s International Men’s Day is ‘Positive Male Role Models' and we are proud to have many amazing role models. We've highlighted a few of them below.
Adam
Adam has been the driving force behind the building of a wellness garden at Barnstaple Fire Station where firefighters can switch off and reflect. The garden was built in memory of Adam’s friend and colleague. He has gone above and beyond to get it completed, working through his lunch breaks, free time and when off-duty. The garden was funded through fundraising and donations, and it helps firefighters who have come away from serious incidents and need time to unwind, talk and reflect. The garden also won a South West in Bloom Award. Adam, you are a real inspiration.
Jody
Jody is doing some vital work to improve the culture of the Service. In Plymouth he has been delivering workshops to stations on a variety of topics which explore and address issues on culture, behaviours, relationships and values.
He is well-informed on cultural issues and shares his knowledge with is colleagues. Jody celebrates people’s differences and is inclusive, reflective and non-judgmental. He shows a passion for making the Service a better place for everyone.
Jody is a positive role model. He provides a safe space for people to discuss sensitive subjects, which takes a lot of skill and courage. Jody has supported a range of work suck as raising awareness about the prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) initiatives and representing the Service at regional and National events.
James
In James’ interview to join the Service he said, “to be a firefighter was his dream and all he wanted to do was to help others”.
Two years later, in 2020, James took the role of Road Safety Officer, bringing together his passion for vehicles and his skills as a firefighter. Since then, he has created links between Somerset Road Safety and the Service that have helped save lives and make roads safer for everyone.
He is our collaboration lead for Road Safety partners, including Avon and Somerset Police, Devon and Cornwall Police and Devon air Ambulance Trust. James is a positive male role model; he is always smiling and nothing is ever too much trouble. James is someone who always helps others and strives for his community.
We want to thank Adam, Jody and James for the wonderful work that they do and the many other amazing role models that we are so lucky to have in the Service.
