Road traffic collision
Whilst crews from Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Wells were attending an RTC on the B3139, a further RTC occurred not that far away on the B3356 Rock Road in between Chilcompton and Stratton On The Fosse, involving one car that had also collided with a fallen tree, and also trapping the driver. Glastonbury and Wells crews were redirected from the previous incident due to their proximity/availability and further appliances from Radstock and Bath (Avon Fire and Rescue Service) were mobilised to assist them.
Due to the size of the tree and position of the vehicle (under the tree) crews were challenged to establish the safest and most effective way to release the casualty. They worked well alongside Ambulance paramedics, first stabilising the vehicle and tree with specialist equipment, before creating space within the vehicle in order to safely extricate the driver, using hydraulic cutting equipment. Once released the casualty was air lifted to hospital by the Air Ambulance crew that had initially responded to the first RTC but were not required. The road was closed for some considerable time due to the size of the fallen tree. The incident was brought under control at 09:23hrs and duty of care was left with the Police carrying out traffic duties. These are the full and final details.
