Two fire engines from Appledore and Bideford along with a water bowser from Barnstaple attended a road in Westward Ho! after a call stating a bin lorry was on fire.
When crews arrived there was one container well alight and crews got to work to extinguish the fire.
An environmental protection unit was also requested from scene which was sent from South Molton. Drains were blocked to stop run off entering them and the environment agency were informed.
The refuge was spread over the highway to allow for sufficient dampening down and digging out to extinguish the fire.
The vehicle itself was slightly damaged by heat but it was mostly the refuge that was on fire. The incident was eventually left with council representatives.
