4x4 Light Vehicle (4x4 LV)

Here you'll find out more about the 4x4 Light Vehicle (4x4 LV). This is a vehicle that can be called upon in many different situations, which means that it's of great use to our service. Read on to learn the different types we have, the equipment that they carry and more.

What the 4x4 LV is

It's a Ford Ranger, used for several roles that it can easily change between.

  • Co-responding. Here, the vehicle is used to attend medical emergencies in the place of an ambulance (but it isn't used to transport casualties to the hospital).
  • Pumps. It can carry a range of Light Portable Pumps (LPPs) to support wildfire firefighting. Once at the scene, it can then assist with transporting firefighters and equipment to areas normal appliances can't access.
  • Specialist Rescue Operations. The LV can be used to transport boats, engines and other water rescue equipment. It can also be used for rescues from height or cave rescues.
  • General transportation. When it's not needed elsewhere, it can be used to transport people and equipment between locations. The LV also tows trailers dedicated for operational purposes. For example, boats and engines (in support of specialist rescue vehicles) and Groundhogs or Argocats (in support of wildfire firefighting).

What it looks like

Where it's used

There are more than 20 4x4 LVs in service. These are strategically located to support the frontline fleet. Apart from those that have a dedicated support role, the vehicles can be transferred between stations to cover other events and purposes.

How it's maintained

Most of the LVs are provided on a lease, so vehicle maintenance happens via local main dealerships.

The equipment is maintained here, by the four workshop teams. Communications systems are maintained by the Communications department based at SHQ.

People who crew the vehicle

An OIC (Officer-In-Charge), a driver or operator and up to three other crew.

Equipment on the vehicle

The equipment depends on the role the vehicle will be covering.

  • Co-responder: enhanced medical care, including defibrillators,

oxygen support or therapy and first aid provision.

  • Wildfire firefighting: low-pressure fire fogging pumps with an onboard water supply.
  • Specialist rescue operations: the equipment involved will be as needed by the situation, for example, it may be water rescue equipment or rescue from height equipment.

The different types

  • Ford Ranger.
  • Toyota Hilux.
  • Land Rover Discovery.
