Selection process

Some key information:

Application forms are only available when vacancies are advertised. On this form you will need to describe your employment history and evidence your knowledge and skills in relation to the person specification. You will need to include two references. CV’s are not accepted.

You can download the necessary application form and the job description/person specification by clicking on the link on the vacancy page.

Alternatively you can request a paper copy of our application form by contacting our HR Operations Team via the contact details on the advert.

Please note that if you have not been invited to attend the Selection Process within ten days of the closing date for applications, you may presume your application has, on this occasion, been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, we thank you for the interest you have shown in Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service

If you are successfully short listed you will attend a selection process which includes an interview and some or all of the following tests (depending on the role):

  • Psychometric tests - assess your skills and abilities including literacy, numeracy, mechanical comprehension etc
  • Occupational Personality Questionnaire - assess your typical or preferred way of behaving
  • Practical job related tests - assess your knowledge and skills through, for example, topical presentations, computer based assignments or task observation

A structured interview is part of all selection processes. It will be conducted by a panel of three Service employees, normally including a line manager and a human resources representative. At the interview you are asked specific questions to determine your suitability for the role.
