Incident - Domestic Property Fire Involving Thatched Roof (Updated)

Date: 10/06/2019
Time: 20:58
Location: Meeth nr Hatherleigh
Area: Central
County: Devon

2 fire appliances from Hatherleigh and Torrington, together with a water carrier from Barnstaple, were initially mobilised to a reports of a barn fire at the above location, following calls from members of the public who could see the fire from across some fields. However, on further inspection it soon became apparent that this was in fact a large property fire, with a thatched roof, that was well alight.

Fire control immediately increased the attendance by a further 6 fire appliances, mobilised from Okehampton, North Tawton, Holsworthy, & Bideford, together with various special supporting appliances from Bovey Tracy, Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Crediton and our Urban Search & Rescue station at our HQ in Exeter.

Update at 23:55hrs - This fire was well established on arrival of initial crews who got to work setting up firefighting media before confirming that the first floor and roof were well alight. Crews are continuing to get this fire under control, which has spread to adjoining buildings and are currently using breathing apparatus, main jets, hose reel jets and compressed air foam. The incident has been split into 4 sectors to aid effective firefighting from different angles and heights. This is a protracted incident and will be for some time.

Update 06:00hrs - This incident is still ongoing but the fire is under control and the incident has been scaled back to 3 pumping appliances, with 2 relief crews en route from Braunton and Witheridge. Crews have made steady progress and are currently at work damping down hotspots using ladders, main jets and hose reel jets. The cause of the fire has been confirmed as a lightening strike to the recently re-thatched roof. All persons were accounted for earlier in the incident, with no casualties.

14:57 hours - Two fire crews are still in attendance along with a Welfare Unit at the scene. Crews are damping down from outside using Foam as the building structure is unstable.

00:00 - Confirmation received from the incident ground that one hundred percent of the roof and eighty percent of the building has been severely damaged by fire. Crews will remain on scene throughout the night damping down and to prevent incident escalation.
