Incident - Lost Horse Rescued

Date: 09/08/2018
Time: 22:45
Location: The Causeway, Woolavington, Bridgwater
Area: Somerset
County: Somerset

A fire appliance and Special Rescue Team from Bridgwater were mobilised earlier this evening, following a call from the owner of a horse, that had been missing for 8hrs and then subsequently found in a mud and water filled ditch.

After liaising with the owner on scene, who had been able to sedate the horse to aid its comfort and extrication, crews set to work rescuing it with harnesses, strops and the use of a mechanical digger (supplied by the land owner).

However, at 23:40hrs the rescue was halted as crews confirmed that the sedation was not working and a decision was made to await the arrival of the vet, who had been contacted by the owner at the time of call. In the meantime the mechanical digger continued to make the access and egress to the ditch easier for our crews, saving time once they were in a position to resume the rescue efforts.

The vet arrived on scene at 00:00hrs and by 00:30hrs crews confirmed they had successfully rescued the horse, using the equipment previously mentioned. There were no other casualties and once in a place of safety, the horse was left in the hands of its relieved owner and the vet, carrying out health checks.
