Press Release - Update on how Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are adapting to coronavirus measures
Posted on 24/03/2020

We are closely monitoring the Government response to coronavirus and have been making some changes to the way we do things to protect our frontline services.

We have various specialist groups, who have been meeting regularly over the last six weeks and we are well prepared for this pandemic.

We are continually monitoring and managing the impact of coronavirus on our staff and communities, so that we continue to deliver our frontline services.

We have taken the following steps to protect our staff and communities:

-        Increased home-working for our support staff

-        Restricted access to stations to station personnel only

-        Cancelled all community events and station visits

We are doing this because we need to protect our frontline staff and prioritise responding to incidents and home fire safety visits to people who are not self-isolating, as well as fire safety checks for businesses.

You can help us too, by doing the following:

-        If you’re spending more time at home, take the following steps to make your home safer from the risk of fire:

o    Test our smoke alarm and carbon monoxide once a month

o    Don’t wedge open fire doors to avoid people touching them. They are there to stop the spread of smoke and fire. Use good handwashing and hygiene routines instead.

o    Take extra care when cooking – over half of fires in the home start in the kitchen.

o    If you’re working from home, think carefully about use of extension leads and charging devices and always use the charger that came with your device. Extension leads should be fully extended and you should check the maximum electrical load they are designed for.

-        If you’re a business owner, you can read more about protecting your business from fire during coronavirus.

We will always be available for home safety advice over the phone – please call 0800 05 02 999. You can also view our home fire safety advice booklet.
