Press Release - Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Concert Band celebrates 25 years
Posted on 03/05/2019

The Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Concert Band is celebrating 25 years of performing throughout Devon, Somerset and Cornwall and beyond.

The Concert Band was originally formed by a serving fire officer, Colin Styles, in May 1994 to augment the existing Corps of Drums.  Many of the original members were serving and retired Fire & Rescue Service personnel and their families.

This accomplished band currently has over 45 members, including former professional musicians and skilled amateurs from the broader local community.  They are proud to represent the fire service in their events, and regularly support both the Fire Fighters Charity and other local charities, such as Force Cancer and Hospiscare.

The band play a varied repertoire including military marches, classical pieces, pop and ragtime numbers, big band classics, and medleys from films and musicals, as well as some contemporary music.

Under the direction of former Royal Marines Bandsman, Martin Andrew, since July 2015 the band has furthered its excellent reputation in the region.

Performance highlights during their 25 years have included the Annual Firefighters' Memorial Service in London; Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee Service in Exeter Cathedral in 2002; performing with the Mevagissey Male Voice Choir in Camborne, Cornwall in 2013; the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations in St Thomas Pleasure Ground, Exeter in 2016; World War I Centenary Concert at Bickleigh Castle in 2018; and collaborating with the East Devon Rock Choir and Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir in 2018 and Exeter Male Voice Choir in 2019.

Annual performances include the Mayor’s Charity Concerts at Courtenay Park, Newton Abbot; the Fire & Rescue Service Open Day at Service Headquarters, Clyst St George; and the Blue Light Carol Service held in Exeter Cathedral.

The  DSFRS Concert Band will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a concert of music from films and musicals, joined by the DSFRS Corps of Drums.

This concert will be held at 19:30 hours on Saturday 11 May 2019 at the Salvation Army Temple, Friars Gate, Exeter, EX2 4AZ, with a retiring collection in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity (No.1093387).
