Press Release - Heathland Fire

The Fire Service were called to reports of a heathland fire at the above location. Fire Control mobilised both fire appliances and 4 by 4 pumping vehicle from Minehead and the water carrier from Bridgwater.

Once the crew got in attendance the officer in charge requested the attendance of two further appliances, an additional 4 by 4 pumping vehicle and one ground hog to attend for additional personnel and access to the fire. Fire Control mobilised one fire appliance from Williton, the rapid intervention vehicle from Porlock, the 4 by 4 pumping vehicle from Nether Stowey and a special customised off road rough terrain vehicle called a ground hog from Cheddar.  

The got to work extinguishing the fire involving gorse and heather with the use of beaters however due to the conditions under foot this was not made easy for the crews.

At 17:00 the officer in charge requested the attendance for two further fire appliances and another 4 by 4 vehicle to attend this incident for additional personnel. Fire Control mobilised one fire appliance from Lynton, one fire appliance from Taunton, 4 by 4 from Dulverton and the incident command unit from Street.

At 19:06 the officer in charge confirmed that the crews now have the fire surrounded and were making good progress to extinguish the fire.

At 19:32 the fire was confirmed extinguished the incident was scaled down to one fire appliance and one ground hog to monitor the area for any reignitions or hot spots.

This fire involved 125 acres of heath land that was completely destroyed by fire. To extinguish the fire the crew used twelve beaters, one ground hog, three 4 by 4 pumping vehicles, 6 fire appliances and one 4 by 4 vehicle. The cause of fire is currently unknown.

At 21:43 this incident is now complete the crews made the area safe and all crews have returned to home station.
